Reasons and solutions for high vacuum pump motor temperature

2017-08-30

Vacuum pumps are used to evacuate air during unit startup and to remove uncondensed gases from the condenser during normal operation. The pump is equipped with a 160kW motor, with a speed of 590r/min, a rated current of 330A, a voltage of 380V, and B-class insulation. During normal operation, the current is 220~230A. Every summer, the motor temperature exceeds the limit, forcing the installation of a temporary cooling fan, but with little effect. Long-term high-temperature operation of the motor will cause insulation aging and shorten its service life. Yutong Pump Industry analyzes the reasons for the high temperature of the vacuum pump motor as follows. Reason analysis: (1) The motor has high power, large working current, and large heat generation. (2

The vacuum pump is used to evacuate air during unit startup and to remove uncondensed gases from the condenser during normal operation.

Cause Analysis: (1) The motor has high power and large operating current, resulting in high heat generation. (2) The fan speed is low, with low wind pressure and air volume. (3) The fan has fewer blades, resulting in low air volume. (4) Dust and oil on the motor reduce its heat dissipation capacity. (5) The bus voltage of the vacuum pump motor is 380V. Due to cable voltage drop and uneven load distribution, the actual voltage applied to the motor is only 365V. The low voltage causes a large operating current.

Countermeasures: The motor power and speed are matched with the vacuum pump and cannot be changed. The fan is installed on the motor main shaft, and the motor speed determines the fan speed, which also cannot be changed. Increasing the number of fan blades can have a certain effect, but after increasing the number of blades, it is difficult to achieve dynamic balance. If the balance is not good, it will increase motor vibration. (1) Extend the original fan cover by 40cm and install an axial flow fan with the same diameter as the fan cover inside. The axial flow fan motor has a power of 850W, a speed of 1489r/min, and a voltage of 380V. The original fan is retained. The axial flow fan has a separate power supply control, and no interlock is set between the axial flow fan and the main motor. Start the axial flow fan immediately after starting the vacuum pump, and stop the axial flow fan 30 minutes after the vacuum pump stops to allow the main motor to cool down sufficiently; (2) Regularly clean the dust on the motor and keep the motor heatsink clean to increase its heat dissipation capacity; (3) Adjust the bus voltage of the vacuum pump to 400V.

Results: (1) Due to the high speed, high wind pressure, and large air volume of the axial flow fan, the cooling effect is greatly enhanced. Under the same ambient temperature and load current, the main motor temperature has dropped by 12℃. The main motor temperature has not exceeded the limit in summer. (2) The axial flow fan can be manually controlled, and it can still operate after the main motor stops, allowing the main motor to cool down sufficiently. (3) Try to balance the load distribution of the two busbars to prevent excessive voltage drop in one busbar due to overload. (4) After voltage adjustment, the vacuum pump operating current is reduced to 210A, and the heat generation is relatively reduced. (5) The aging speed of the main motor insulation is slowed down, extending its service life.
